However, Greek-American filmmaker Michael Angelo Zervos is not content with just visiting all the countries; he aims to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest completion of this impressive feat.
Taylor Demonbreun currently holds the record, having accomplished the task in 554 days. However, in 2019, Brazilian Anderson Diaz claimed to have traveled to all 195 countries within 543 days. Zervos plans to complete the challenge in under 530 days next year.
Being a veteran of the film and television industry for 13 years, Zervos, like many others, was severely affected by the pandemic. He pondered the value of his profession when the world was grappling with immense suffering. Feeling the need to contribute more tangibly, he conceived Project Kosmos—a venture that combines his desire for personal growth, love of travel, and passion for storytelling to help others.
Through Project Kosmos, Zervos aims to capture stories of human happiness from every country he visits. He plans to ask individuals the question, "What is the happiest moment of your life?" with the hope of compiling a global repository of happiness. This collection of stories can serve as a source of inspiration and solace for those going through tough times, reminding them of the beauty and joy that life has to offer, particularly after the challenging years experienced by many around the world.
When asked about the opinions of his family and friends regarding his ambitious endeavor, Zervos disclosed that the responses were mixed. Some think he has lost his mind, while others believe it aligns perfectly with his adventurous personality, leading him to contemplate the company he keeps.
Having already traveled to 55 countries, Zervos is confident in his ability to endure the rigors of a year and a half of continuous travel. Among the challenges he anticipates, he considers logistical aspects such as transit to be the most difficult. With the need to visit a new country every three days, he acknowledges the possibility of facing limited flight options that could result in lengthy waits and alternative modes of transport like buses. Furthermore, navigating diverse infrastructures, currencies, and travel documentation poses additional hurdles.
