Greek Government Honors Australian WWII Veterans for Anti-Nazi Efforts

Long-overdue Recognition: Greek Government Honors Australian WWII Veterans for Anti-Nazi Efforts

After 82 years, the Greek government finally honoured 40 Australians who fought against the Nazis in Greece. In a poignant ceremony, the families of these veterans were awarded special medals as a heartfelt expression of gratitude for their sacrifices during World War II.

During World War II, Australian forces were deployed to Greece as part of the Allied efforts to assist in the defence against Axis powers, particularly the German invasion. In 1941, German forces invaded Greece, and Australian troops, along with other Allied forces, were involved in the efforts to resist and counter the Axis advance.

The Battle of Greece, which took place in April 1941, saw the Allied forces, including Australian soldiers, fighting against the German invasion. Ultimately, Greece fell to Axis control, but the Australian involvement in the conflict is remembered and honoured for their contribution to the broader war effort against Nazi forces.
