Aegean & Argosaronic Seas Battered by High Winds, Cancelling Sailings (Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Islands)

storm greece weather

Strong gusts reaching Beaufort force 9 pummeled the Aegean Sea on Sunday, forcing the cancellation of ferry services from Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio. The adverse weather cut off islands in the Argosaronic Gulf (Salamis, Aegina, Hydra, Poros, Spetses).

Cancellations extended nationwide, impacting routes like Aghia Marina-Styra, Volos-Sporades, Kyllini-Prinos (Thassos), and Alexandroupolis-Samothrace. The sole exception was Keramoti-Thassos morning sailings.

Passengers should contact local port authorities or travel agencies for updated information on ferry disruptions.

Snow Gradually Dissipates, Some Rural Roads Remain Cautious

  • Snowfall tapered off throughout Sunday, clearing from most lowland regions of Western Macedonia. Higher elevations (above 1,200m) still experience light snowfall.
  • Traffic on Egnatia Odos and its vertical axes is back to normal.
  • Caution is advised on specific rural roads in Kozani, Florina, Grevena, and Kastoria, where higher elevations may require snow chains or special tires.
  • Drivers are urged to stay alert for potential icy patches, especially with temperatures plunging below zero across the region.

Trikala Region: Snowfall Managed, Roads Operational

  • Trikala Region saw snowfall reaching 10-15cm at higher points, but Deputy Governor Chryssa Didi assures no impact on transportation.
  • 40 snow removal machines are actively clearing affected areas.
  • Previously closed roads Oreokastro-Melanthochori and Xirochori-Prochoma have reopened, with Chortiatis-Aghios Vassilios expected to follow suit by Sunday.
