Mytilineos Secures Bauxite Exploration License in Ghana

On Monday, Mytilineos announced securing a prospecting license from the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) to explore and extract bauxite deposits in the Ninayhin-Mpasaaso region.

The signing ceremony, attended by Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, took place in Accra on January 26th. Building on its successful Energy & Metals model and resulting synergies, Mytilineos aims to implement a similar approach in Ghana, where it already holds in-depth understanding of the energy sector through various projects.

The initial 18-month project phase will involve studies to confirm reserves, develop mines, and conduct a comprehensive feasibility study. The designated area, Ninayhin Block C, holds an estimated 300 million tons of bauxite reserves, projected to yield 10 million tons annually, representing a potential turnover of $500 million at current prices.

In collaboration with GIADEC, Mytilineos will assess building an alumina production unit with an annual capacity of up to 1.5 million tons. This compares to the current 865,000-ton annual aluminum production at their Agios Nikolaos plant in Viotia, Greece.

This concession allows Mytilineos, the sole vertically integrated bauxite-alumina-cast aluminum producer in the EU, to solidify its global supply chain diversification and strengthen its position across the entire aluminum value chain.
