The aim is to serve 20,000 passengers per hour and 300,000 per day

The people of Thessaloniki will have to wait a few minutes at a Metro stop to reach their destination since a train will pass approximately every two minutes to serve 20,000 passengers per hour and 300,000 per day.

Carlo Bianco, managing director of THEMA S.A., who has taken over the operation and management of the Metro, spoke at an event on "New projects, investments and innovations in transport" organised by the Hellenic-Italian Chamber, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Democritus University of Thessaloniki, in the context of the 32nd Money Show.

Bianco even considered the estimate of 300,000 passengers to be conservative, stressing that the waiting time would be reduced, while with the extension of the Metro to Kalamaria, another 15,000 would be added.

He pointed out that the Metro will be inspected by an independent body to obtain a safety certificate and an operating license from the Ministry of Transport. He reminded that the automatic trains will be driverless, zeroing out the case of human error.

For Hitachi Rail executive Barbara Ferrari, who spoke at the event, the interconnection of means of transport plays an important role, citing as an example the company's digital application that simplifies travel practically and economically.
