Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

On this rare leap year day, the Orthodox community celebrates the 84th birthday of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, a visionary spiritual leader whose tireless efforts have significantly impacted the Orthodox Church and global society.

Born Dimitrios H. Archontonis on February 29, 1940, in Agioi Theodoroi, Imbros, his dedication to his faith and pursuit of unity and environmental advocacy have earned him international respect and recognition.

Patriarch Bartholomew's educational journey featured studies at esteemed institutions around the world, highlighting his commitment to multicultural understanding and communication. He underwent education at the Zografion Lyceum in Constantinople, the Halki Theological School, the Institute of Oriental Studies in Rome, the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey in Switzerland, and the University of Munich. Fluent in seven languages, his linguistic skills have facilitated fruitful interfaith and intercultural dialogues.

His ecclesiastical journey began with ordination as a deacon in 1961, followed by ordination as a presbyter in 1969. In 1973, he became the Metropolitan of Philadelphia, and in 1990, he ascended to the position of Elder Metropolitan of Chalcedon. On October 22, 1991, he was unanimously elected as the 270th Ecumenical Patriarch, a role he continues to fulfill with unwavering dedication.

During his tenure, Patriarch Bartholomew has prioritized pan-Orthodox unity, establishing the Assemblies of the Orthodox Primates. His invitation to primates to gather at the Phanar has encouraged collaboration, and in June 2016, he convened and presided over the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church, a significant milestone in pursuing unity of faith.

The Ecumenical Patriarch remains committed to ecumenical dialogue, actively engaging in interfaith discussions with leaders from other Christian churches. His visits to their headquarters, participation in inter-Christian conferences, and commemorations have contributed to fostering understanding and collaboration between different faith communities.

Patriarch Bartholomew's contributions extend beyond the realm of religion. He has been acknowledged for his efforts by Heads of State and Government, delivering impactful addresses at various international organizations. Additionally, he has actively promoted education, resulting in the establishment of the "Yearbook of the Ecumenical Patriarchate" and the reissue of the official information magazine, "Orthodoxia."

His commitment to environmental preservation and protection has been a distinctive facet of his leadership. Building on the work initiated by Patriarch Dimitrios, Bartholomew has tirelessly advocated for the planet's well-being and organized ecological seminars and international symposia worldwide. By raising awareness and inspiring action, he has significantly influenced global environmental discourse.

Despite the challenges faced by the Orthodox Church, Patriarch Bartholomew remains steadfast in his faith and commitment to its progress. Notably, he continues to strive towards reopening the Halki School of Theology, symbolizing his dedication to theological education and shaping future spiritual leaders.

On this momentous occasion, we join the Orthodox community in extending heartfelt birthday wishes to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and expressing gratitude for his exemplary leadership. May his wisdom, compassion, and unwavering commitment to unity and environmental stewardship continue to inspire generations to come.

Happy 84th birthday, Your All-Holiness!
