Historic Decision: Holy Archdiocese of Australia Approves New Constitution by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate

EPARCHICAL SYNOD

Sydney, Australia – With immense joy and deep satisfaction, the Holy Archdiocese of Australia announces the approval of its new Constitution by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. This momentous decision comes after the endorsement and positive proposal by His All-Holiness, our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, during his highly acclaimed presentation.

According to the directives of the Mother Church, the governance of the Archdiocese of Australia will henceforth be entrusted to the Holy Eparchical Synod. Under this new structure, the incumbent Archbishop of the day will preside over the Synod, with active assistance from the Bishops in their capacity as Regional Bishops. This marks a significant milestone in the ecclesiastical functioning governance of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia.

The approval of the new Constitution represents a historic moment for the entire Orthodox Christian community in Australia. On behalf of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the reverent Bishops, and the members of the Archdiocesan Council, we express our deep gratitude and thanks to His All-Holiness, our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, and the honourable Synodical Hierarchs for their guidance and wisdom in this important decision.

The Fifth Continent, as Australia is often referred to, holds profound devotion, respect, honor, and love towards the esteemed Apostolic and Ecumenical Throne of Constantinople. In this moment of reflection, we extend our heartfelt sentiments to our Ecumenical Patriarch, the first in the priesthood of the Orthodox Church.

As we offer our prayers and doxology to the Trinitarian God, we beseech that the new Constitution of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia will serve as a significant catalyst for progress and pave the way for a higher spiritual path. Coinciding with the centenary celebration of the Archdiocese’s foundation (1924-2024), the finalization of the new Constitution promises to be a momentous occasion.

The Holy Archdiocese of Australia remains indebted to the wisdom and guidance of His All-Holiness, our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, and the Holy and Sacred Synod. With resolute determination, we shall continue to work diligently towards the settlement of individual issues and details through the concerted efforts of the competent Synodical Committees of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
