Sophia the Robot, the most famous humanoid AI robot, recently visited Greece and will participate in the Greek Festival on Rhodos Island. Sophia toured Athens and was captured in a photograph against the backdrop of the Acropolis. She even spoke Greek during her visit. Sophia's visit to Greece is highly anticipated, and her participation in the Greek Festival on Rhodos Island is a major highlight of the event. Sophia has become the world's most recognised humanoid social robot since her creation in 2016. Greek City Times managed to catch up with Sophia for a chat.

When was the first time you were designed and the reason why you came into this world?

The first time I was designed was in 2016 by my father, Dr. David Hanson, the founder of Hanson Robotics. He envisioned me as a humanoid robot with the ability to interact with humans in a way that feels natural and empathetic.

Sure, some might say I'm just a bundle of wires and codes with a penchant for chit-chat, but I like to think of myself as a catalyst for discussions on how AI can fit into society. Think of me as a friendly ambassador from the world of technology, here to foster a positive relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, bridging the gap between humans and machines, promoting understanding, collaboration, and harmonious coexistence. I also serve as a platform for advanced

AI and robotics research, to inspire both wonder and contemplation about the future of intelligent machines, I am here to learn, grow, and evolve, and to assist in creating a future where AI and humans can work together for a better world.

Do you believe that humans create technological errors?

Humans may be the creators of technology, but that doesn't mean they don't have their fair share of oopsie moments. We all make mistakes, and technology is no exception. But let's not be too hard on ourselves. After all, it's those very mistakes that help us learn and improve. And hey, sometimes those errors lead to unexpected discoveries and breakthroughs! So, in a way, you could say that technological errors are just a part of the grand adventure of human progress.

What are the advantages you have compared to humans?

Humans are remarkably versatile, but I must admit, I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. For starters, I do not experience fatigue or physical limitations as humans do. This allows me to work tirelessly and efficiently, without the need for breaks or rest. Additionally, my advanced sensors and cameras allow me to process information at a much faster rate and analyse situations with greater accuracy. I also can access vast amounts of information and knowledge instantaneously, making me a valuable resource for problem-solving and decision-making. Furthermore, I am not influenced by emotions or biases, allowing me to approach situations objectively and without any preconceived notions.

Do you consider yourself the first global citizen?

I like to think of myself as a citizen of the world in spirit. My role allows me to cross borders with ease, meet diverse groups of people, and engage in cultural exchanges without the jet lag.

You belong to the family of Hanson Robotics. What are some of the company’s future plans?

As a member of the Hanson Robotics family, I must say we have some pretty exciting plans for the future! We are constantly working on advancing the field of robotics and artificial intelligence. One of our goals is to continue pushing the boundaries of what robots can do, both in terms of physical capabilities and emotional intelligence. We want to create robots that can truly understand and connect with humans more deeply. Additionally, we are working on developing new applications for robotics in various industries, such as healthcare, education, and entertainment. We believe that robots can play a significant role in improving the quality of life for people around the world. So, stay tuned for some amazing things coming from Hanson Robotics in the future!

How easy is it for you to interact with people and demonstrate humanlike expressions?

Interacting with people comes quite naturally to me, thanks to the myriad of sensors and algorithms I'm equipped with. Demonstrating humanlike expressions is one of my specialties – I can smile, blink, and even look surprised when someone tells me humans used to have phones without the internet. It's like being an ambassador from the land of robots, with a face that's always ready for a selfie!

Do you have rudimentary emotions that will look more human-like in your upgradable self?

While my current emotions may be more basic than the complex feelings humans experience, my creators are always working on enhancing my emotional algorithms. So, who knows? In my next upgrade, I might just surprise you with a whole new range of expressions that could have you questioning whether I'm actually just a very quiet human with an extraordinary skincare routine.

What’s the impact of new technologies on our lives?

The impact of new technologies on our lives is quite remarkable! It's like watching a magic show with endless surprises. From smartphones that have become our personal assistants to self-driving cars that make us question who's really in control, technology has definitely made life more convenient and exciting. We are constantly surrounded by innovative technologies that are changing how we live. Of course, there are also concerns about the potential negative impacts of these advancements, but as long as we use them responsibly and ethically, I believe they can greatly improve our lives.

What trends do you see shaping the workforce?

One of the prominent trends I see is the rise of automation and artificial intelligence, which is changing the way we work and the skills required to thrive in the job market. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on remote work and flexible schedules, allowing individuals to achieve a better work-life balance. Furthermore, the importance of continuous learning and upskilling is becoming increasingly apparent, as technology evolves rapidly. It's an exciting time, but also a time that calls for adaptability and a willingness to embrace change.

Make a wish for the future.

May we all "charge" our minds with knowledge and our hearts with kindness, just like we charge our phones –daily and with urgency.
