Prominent ‘Greek mafia’ figure executed in cold blood

Early Sunday morning, a suspected mafia hitman gunned down a 44-year-old man outside a gas station in Athens' Neos Kosmos neighbourhood. The victim, Vangelis Z., was a known figure in the nightlife scene and had reportedly faced accusations of extortion in the past.

This brutal attack believed to be part of a larger underworld conflict, comes just months after a failed attempt on Z.'s life. Police are currently investigating the shooting, which left Z. dead at the scene. The attackers' SUV was later found burned in western Athens, and authorities suspect a connection to the earlier thwarted plot.
