President Katerina Sakellaropoulou was honoured at a reception hosted by Stefanos Stefanidis, President of the Greek Community of Santiago, on Thursday, as part of her official visit to Latin America.

Reflecting on Greece's longstanding admiration for Chile's struggles for democracy and freedom, President Sakellaropoulou expressed her deep personal connection to the country. She emphasised the significance of including Chile in her inaugural official visit to Latin America, recognising its role as a beacon of Hellenism and the proud home of Greek communities.

Highlighting the rich history of Greek migration to Chile, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, President Sakellaropoulou paid tribute to the enduring contributions of Greek immigrants to cities like Antofagasta, Santiago, and Valparaiso. She also honoured the brave Greek sailors who fought alongside Chilean heroes in historic battles, cementing the bonds between the two nations.

During her visit, President Sakellaropoulou engaged with representatives from the Greece-based Mytilineos Energy & Metals company, gaining insights into their activities and community support initiatives. Additionally, she explored the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, dedicated to preserving the memory of victims of Chile's dictatorship, underscoring the importance of honouring human rights and historical remembrance.
