French Actor Gerard Depardieu Detained Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Renowned French actor Gerard Depardieu, 75, has been ordered to be detained for questioning following accusations of sexual assault. The actor, known for his prolific career in film, has vehemently denied the allegations, maintaining his innocence.

Depardieu's legal troubles stem from accusations made by two women. The first accuser, a decorator who worked on the set of the film 'Les Volets Verts', alleges that Depardieu sexually assaulted her in 2021. The second accuser, a filming assistant, claims she was assaulted by the actor in 2014.

The investigation into the allegations has been assigned to the third department of the judicial police in Paris. The first complainant described a pattern of offensive behaviour from Depardieu during filming, culminating in a violent assault where he allegedly forcibly massaged her inappropriately.

These recent charges add to previous accusations levelled against Depardieu. Actress Charlotte Arnoux has accused him of rape and sexual assault dating back to 2020. Another actress, Hélène Daras, filed a lawsuit against Depardieu for sexual assault during filming in 2007, although this case was dismissed due to the statute of limitations.

Further complicating matters, a complaint has been filed against Depardieu in Spain by journalist and writer Ruth Basa, alleging rape in 1995.

In response to the accusations, Depardieu issued an open letter in October 2023, vehemently denying any wrongdoing. He reiterated his stance in light of the allegations made by Charlotte Arnoux, asserting, "I have never, ever abused a woman."
