Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras boarded and took a ride on the first of the new electric buses that entered service after being added to the fleet of the Athens public bus company, OSY SA, on Friday.

“Today is an important day for urban transport in Athens. The electric buses are now in circulation, as promised by the OSY administration and the political leadership of the ministry, on the streets of Athens.

All 140 electric buses have been incorporated into the capital’s transportation project. Among them, 46 buses are now in service today – for the first time – for the citizens. In the coming weeks, this number is expected to double,” Staikouras said, adding: “These are modern buses with a reduced energy impact and environmental consequences. They are also vehicles that cater to citizens with mobility challenges. Urban transportation is being modernized. We are entering a new era. Nevertheless, all of us must do more to improve the daily lives of citizens, always with respect for the passengers.”
