Greek Culture Minister Inaugurates Restored Saplitza Store Rooms in Mytilini

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni inaugurated the restored Saplitza Store Rooms in the Lower Castle of Mytilini yesterday, during a two-day visit to review the ministry’s projects on the North Aegean island.

The 2.9-million-euro project, completed by the Lesvos Ephorate of Antiquities, included restoration work and the construction of a metal building to house ceramics laboratories and excavation findings.

Upon arrival, Mendoni chaired a meeting with Regional Governor Konstantinos Moutzouris and other officials to review ongoing and future projects funded by the 2021-2027 North Aegean regional program. Key projects include the Castle of Mytilini and the stabilisation of the Mithymna Castle rock facade.

Mendoni also met with Mytilini Mayor Panagiotis Christofas, visited Agios Therapon church and the Valide Mosque to inspect restoration work, and inaugurated the "Cults of Gods on Lesvos" exhibition at the New Archaeological Museum of Mytilini. Later, she met with West Lesvos Mayor Taxiarchis Verros and a delegation from the Zoodochos Pigi Vrisas Church, assuring them that restoration of the earthquake-damaged church will be funded by the new NSRF program.
