In a significant move, Greece has nominated Apostolos Tzitzikostas for the position of Commissioner in the upcoming European Commission.
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis made the announcement on Thursday during a press briefing.
"Apostolos Tzitzikostas is an individual with extensive experience in institutional roles both within Greece and across Europe," Marinakis stated. "He was elected president of the European Committee of the Regions in 2020, demonstrating his capability and leadership."
Currently serving as the governor of Central Macedonia, Tzitzikostas is a prominent political figure known for his strong electoral support, having been elected three times with over 50% of the vote. His nomination is seen as a politically strategic decision that underscores the significance of Macedonia and Northern Greece as a region of strategic, geopolitical, and connectivity importance for both the Balkans and South-Eastern Europe, as well as the northeastern Mediterranean.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is scheduled to meet with Tzitzikostas at the Maximos Mansion at 18:00 to discuss the nomination further.
