Southern Rethymno faces a tense night as a relentless wildfire, now burning for over 48 hours, has forced the precautionary evacuation of nine villages. The Fire Department's response has been extensive, with 290 firefighters, 20 hiking teams, and 54 vehicles working tirelessly to contain the blaze.
Thousands of hectares have been scorched, primarily affecting olive groves and low-lying vegetation. The fire's spread has been exacerbated by strong, shifting winds, making containment efforts challenging. However, the National Weather Service predicts that the winds will subside after 11:00 p.m., offering a potential respite.
In addition to the evacuations, several settlements, including Apodoulou, Vathiako, Ardaktos, Platanos, and Lochria, are without electricity due to the fire's destruction of power poles.
Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias arrived in Rethymno to oversee the efforts. "No one is leaving until the job is done," he declared after a briefing in the field. Kikilias highlighted the intense efforts of firefighters, volunteers, local government officials, police, and the military in battling the fire. He also announced the arrival of 50 additional forest commanders, bringing the total firefighting force to over 250 personnel, supported by 50 vehicles and 23 aerial units.
Kikilias expressed cautious optimism, noting that there are currently no active fire fronts but emphasised the importance of continued vigilance, particularly if the winds pick up again. "We must work hard tonight and tomorrow to secure a positive outcome. The aerial units will continue their efforts, and we hope for the best," he said.
Regarding compensation for those affected, Kikilias assured that he is in close contact with the relevant authorities, and those who have suffered losses will receive the necessary support. "Right now, our priority is to control the fire," he stated.
