Greece and Australia Move Toward Bilateral Health Agreement: Talks Advance in Athens

Health Agreement

The prospect of a Bilateral Health Agreement between Australia and Greece took a significant step forward following a recent meeting between Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) President Bill Papastergiadis OAM and Greek Minister for Health, Adonis Georgiadis.

During their discussion, Papastergiadis raised the ongoing efforts of the GCM to establish such an agreement, which would benefit citizens of both countries when facing health issues while abroad.

Minister Georgiadis expressed strong support for the initiative, stating, “Yes, we support the GCM in its endeavors to secure a bilateral health agreement between Greece and Australia. I will work with the GCM and the Australian Government to achieve this.” This declaration marks a promising development in the GCM’s long-standing campaign for the agreement.

Papastergiadis underscored the critical importance of the agreement, highlighting its potential to provide security and peace of mind, particularly for the elderly, when traveling between the two nations. “The effect of such an agreement is to support our respective citizens when they are most vulnerable—experiencing ill health while overseas,” he noted.

The GCM President emphasised the deep ties between Australia and Greece, noting that these connections extend beyond historical alliances and encompass the shared experiences of significant migration. “Greeks call both lands home. Our two countries have shared values and ideals. Further developing these ties by way of bilateral agreements is critical to this relationship. Such agreements have a real benefit to our citizens,” Papastergiadis stated.
