The Greek Shipping Ministry has approved the installation and operation of two temporary desalination plants on the island of Tinos to address ongoing water shortages.
The licences, authorised by Deputy Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Minister Stefanos Gikas, follow a recommendation from the General Secretariat of the Aegean and Island Policy.
The plants will be located in the Kardiani area in the west and the Panormos area in the northeast, each with a daily capacity of 200 cubic metres. Gikas emphasised the ministry's commitment to supporting local governments in dealing with challenges posed by the climate crisis.
Over the past three years, the General Secretariat has implemented more than 300 projects across 75 islands, with 18 licenses for temporary desalination plants issued in the first seven months of 2024 alone. This effort is part of a broader initiative led by Minister Christos Stylianides to improve water management on the islands.
