Summer is the best season for our favourite fruits and vegetables. And, of course, it is the right time to find fresh tomatoes.
Tomatoes stars in many classic Greek dishes—notably the village salad—and is currently at its best.
But how are tomatoes best preserved?
Do not put them in the refrigerator, as the cold changes their aromas, to keep their flavour and aromas and to ensure a good result on our plates.
Storage outside the fridge is the best, as long as we consume them within a few days. Especially now, with the heat, the life of the tomato is very limited.
Do not remove the stems
For the best possible result in preserving tomatoes, place them in a container outside the refrigerator without removing their stems. These protect them from the cold, humidity, and air penetration inside them, which reduces their life span.
If the stalks have already been removed before you buy them, you can better preserve them by placing them upside down in the container to prevent air from entering, which alters the taste and texture and causes them to wilt immediately.
Pay attention to the surrounding fruits and vegetables
The best place to properly store tomatoes is in your fruit bowl. However, some rules must be followed so that we do not have the opposite results.
What should we look out for? Stay away from bananas and apples, which give off ethylene, a gas that can dry out nearby fruits and vegetables.
The right temperature
To protect your vegetables best, wrap them in kitchen paper to prevent moisture. Your fruit bowl should be shady and cool, away from excessive heat and the sun, ideally in constant temperature conditions.
