Chania Norovirus Outbreak: 67 Hospitalised, Including 23 Engineering Students

A norovirus outbreak in Chania has led to 67 people, including 23 students from the Faculty of Engineering, being hospitalised with viral gastroenteritis.

The highly contagious virus has caused a surge in emergency room visits at Chania General Hospital, with symptoms including severe vomiting and diarrhea.

According to Matina Pagoni, president of Pan Hellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers, the viral gastroenteritis is not bacterial and typically lasts about three days. She emphasised the importance of hydration rather than special medication. The president of PDEDN, Michalis Giannakos, noted that the number of cases initially stood at 43, but quickly rose to 67 by Tuesday night.

Hospital governor George Beas confirmed that tests revealed norovirus as the cause of the outbreak. Protective measures have been implemented, including restricted hospital visits until October 18. The Public Health Directorate of Crete is working closely with the hospital to identify the source of the infection, as cases have emerged from various areas of Chania.

Several patients have already been discharged, while others remain under treatment.
