Piraeus Dockworkers Halt Shipment Suspected of Carrying Ammunition to Israel

Athens, Greece - Tensions ran high at Piraeus Port on Thursday night as dockworkers, in a show of solidarity with Palestine, blocked the loading of a container suspected of containing ammunition destined for Israel.

The workers, joined by members of various labour unions and local community groups, voiced their opposition to the shipment and NATO, chanting slogans and holding a banner proclaiming their support for the Palestinian people.

The container, reportedly originating from North Macedonia and en route to Haifa, Israel, has not undergone independent inspection to confirm its contents. However, its alleged nature sparked outrage among the dockworkers, who took action based on their commitment to peace and their refusal to be complicit in any potential escalation of violence.

Markos Bekris, head of both the Piraeus Port Dock Containers Workers Union (ENEDEP) and the Piraeus Labor Center, explained that the decision to halt the shipment stemmed from a general assembly held the previous day.

“We will not allow the transport of war material that contributes to the suffering of the Palestinian people,” Bekris declared, addressing the workers during the night shift.

“We refuse to let the port of Piraeus be used as a war base,” he continued, emphasizing the workers’ demands for Greece to cease its involvement in international conflicts. “Disengagement from imperialist agendas and rivalries that jeopardize our nation and the port of Piraeus is crucial.”

The incident highlights the growing unease among Greek citizens regarding their country's role in geopolitical conflicts and their unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
