The process of issuing the new Greek identity cards has undergone significant changes aimed at improving efficiency and accessibility for citizens.
The new system, introduced by Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis, allows residents to submit their documents for a new identity card at any competent Security Service, regardless of where they live. This move expands the authority for identity card issuance beyond local jurisdictions.
Under the new regulations, citizens can visit Security Services in major regions, such as Attica and Thessaloniki, or any Security Department or Sub-Directorate across the country. In areas without these services, the local police department will handle the process. This nationwide flexibility is expected to speed up the process and reduce bureaucracy.
The Ministry of Citizen Protection has emphasised that this new procedure aims to streamline services for citizens by:
- Providing flexibility: Citizens can submit their documents at any competent authority, no longer restricted by their residential area.
- Saving time: The process is now faster and more efficient, reducing waiting times.
- Simplifying bureaucracy: Procedures have been simplified, allowing citizens to receive their identity cards more quickly and easily.
Citizens can also schedule appointments online via the [id.gov.gr] platform for issuing or replacing their identity cards, which can be due to data changes, expiration, or wear and tear. The digital platform, developed by the Ministry of Digital Governance, allows users to log in using Taxisnet credentials.
Documents Required for New Identity Cards
To obtain the new identity card (ID1), citizens must provide the following:
1. Photograph: A digital photo, either taken at the issuing authority or uploaded through the myPhoto application on gov.gr by a certified photographer.
2. Application form: A declaration provided by the issuing authority, which is then processed using the Ministry of Interior’s Citizens’ Register.
3. Identity card application: This form will be completed by the issuing authority based on the citizen's demographic information.
4. Electronic fee of €10: Citizens are required to pay a fee for the issuance of the card, which covers production and transportation costs. Families with many children pay a reduced fee of €5.
5. Old identity card: For replacements, citizens must surrender their old (blue) ID card.
For those applying for their first identity card, an adult witness with valid identification is required to verify their identity.
Processing Time
The new ID cards are produced with high-security standards at the Hellenic Police Headquarters in Kaisariani, Attica. The process from application to card delivery takes approximately seven days. Once issued, the card will be integrated with various digital services, including ADSE and the GOV.GR wallet, ensuring seamless access to government services.
