The ABC has revealed exciting new roles for esteemed political and public affairs journalists Patricia Karvelas and Greg Jennett, effective 2025.
Patricia Karvelas, who is of Greek Australian heritage and has often spoken about how her cultural background has shaped her career and perspective, will transition to an expanded role within ABC NEWS after a decade at Radio National. In 2025, in addition to her current roles presenting Q+A, the weekly political program The Party Room, and contributing to ABC NEWS online with analyses, she will also become the new presenter of Afternoon Briefing each weekday on ABC iview and the ABC NEWS Channel.
Meanwhile, Greg Jennett will shift from hosting Afternoon Briefing, a role he has held since returning from ABC’s Washington Bureau in 2022, to a senior position within the Northbourne, Canberra newsroom. He will present the ACT 7PM News from Sunday to Thursday and conduct Stateline interviews, as well as collaborate with the Canberra Parliament House team for federal election coverage.
The current ACT 7PM presenter, James Glenday, will embark on a new, exciting project next year, with further details to be announced soon. Having held his role for two years, including significant contributions to this month's ACT election coverage, Glenday’s next steps are greatly anticipated.
Afternoon Briefing, launched by Karvelas in 2018 and recently led by Jennett, continues to thrive. Known for its insightful interviews with key decision makers and stakeholders, it regularly breaks news and shapes discussions on national and global affairs.
Additionally, Karvelas will introduce a new ABC NEWS politics podcast, Politics Now, which will feature top-tier political insights available via the ABC Listen app. The podcast will be updated daily during the federal election campaign, with additional episodes released as major political stories unfold.
Patricia Karvelas: "The opportunity to anchor a daily national affairs and politics program is immensely thrilling, especially given the current demand for explanations of complex issues among Australians. Afternoon Briefing is pivotal in the daily news agenda."
"I’ve always dreamt of launching a podcast that’s fast, responsive, and engaging with evolving political stories. It’s my preferred content consumption method, and I know our audience desires on-demand content accessible anytime."
Greg Jennett: "Afternoon Briefing's evolution over the past three years has been a point of pride, offering a platform for politicians from all backgrounds to discuss pressing issues."
"In 2025, I aim to concentrate on stories throughout our nation’s capital, while maintaining proximity to the political pulse that's been fundamental to my reporting for over twenty years. I eagerly anticipate the next chapter."
ABC Director of News, Justin Stevens: "Patricia Karvelas and Greg Jennett rank among the top political journalists in the country, delivering timely insights and analyses of critical stories domestically and globally. Their expertise and experience will be invaluable as we prepare for the upcoming federal election."
