Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides at the Maximos Mansion on Thursday after Christodoulides’s recent discussions with US President Joe Biden.
The meeting is seen as a pivotal moment for both Greek and Cypriot diplomacy, as it marked the first official visit by a Cypriot president to the White House in nearly three decades.
Mitsotakis emphasised the significance of the US’s recent stance, saying, “The United States recognises that the time has come for a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions. This acknowledgment adds significant momentum to recent developments.” He underscored how the meeting with Biden further strengthens Cyprus’s strategic relationship with the US, which complements Greece’s own ties with Washington.
President Christodoulides shared insights from his discussions in the US, highlighting the growing recognition of Cyprus and Greece’s roles in regional stability. He expressed optimism, noting that the strategic partnership with the US is “yielding results and gaining recognition.” He added, “There is no room for hesitation in foreign policy. We are on the right side of history, which enhances our efforts for a resolution to the Cyprus issue at this critical time.”
The discussions come at a pivotal moment, reinforcing the collaborative foreign policy between Greece and Cyprus as both nations navigate pressing regional issues.
