In a prominent defamation lawsuit taking place in London, Evangelos Marinakis, a Greek shipping tycoon, has filed a case against Irini Karipidis, the President of Aris Football Club. Marinakis alleges that Karipidis has orchestrated an online smear campaign targeting him with accusations of match-fixing and other illicit activities.
As the owner of Olympiakos and the Premier League club Nottingham Forest, Marinakis contends that Karipidis has disseminated false claims that have tarnished his reputation. He accuses her of being responsible for a website that suggests his involvement in match-fixing, drug smuggling, and illicitly shipping Russian oil against sanctions—allegations that Marinakis adamantly refutes.
The legal tension has been further heightened by Karipidis questioning the legitimacy of Nottingham Forest's promotion to the Premier League.
In the courtroom, Karipidis’ legal representative argued that Marinakis initiated his campaign against her brother, Theo Karipidis, a major shareholder of Aris, following Theo's refusal to manipulate a match between Olympiakos and Aris in 2023.
