PM Mitsotakis Highlights Greece's AI Progress at Athens Conference

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis praised Greece’s advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) during his address at the Future Unfold: What Unfolds When AI Meets Purpose conference in Athens.

Speaking at the event at the Athens Concert Hall, Mitsotakis emphasised that Greece has transformed from being a follower to a leader in how the state communicates with its citizens, largely due to AI integration.

“We took a large leap forward,” Mitsotakis said, reflecting on Greece’s progress in using AI to improve public services. He pointed to a pilot project using AI for the legal review of cadastre contracts, which has significantly reduced the time needed for civil servants to complete tasks. "AI doesn’t replace jobs; it enhances the productivity of civil servants. What used to take two hours now takes just 10 minutes with AI," he added.

In addition to AI, the Prime Minister discussed Greece’s economic recovery and efforts to attract more investment. He noted that after the financial crisis, Greece shifted from a consumption-based economy to one focused on investments, creating a stable environment for businesses. "What any business needs to invest is a stable framework. We’ve made significant progress in creating a stable tax system, something many other countries are still striving for," he stated.

Mitsotakis also addressed the role of Greece in international relations, particularly its strategic partnership with the United States. He highlighted the importance of Greece’s defence collaboration with the U.S. and its influence in the region. “Greek-American relations are based not only on shared democratic values but also on mutual interests,” he said.

Regarding the European Union, Mitsotakis argued that the EU must increase defence spending and strengthen collaboration with the U.S. to enhance Europe's strategic autonomy. He called for Europe to move past its current stagnation and build closer ties with the U.S., particularly in defence matters.
