ATHENS, Greece – Storm Bora has unleashed havoc across Greece, bringing torrential rains and severe flooding that has claimed the lives of two men and prompted hundreds of emergency calls.
By Saturday night, emergency services had logged over 290 calls for assistance, responding to incidents across the country, including Central Macedonia and the islands of Lemnos, Chios, and Rhodes.
Tragically, two fatalities have been reported on the island of Lemnos. One man’s body was recovered from a creek swollen by the relentless rainfall, while another was found dead in his flooded home.
The island of Rhodes experienced particularly intense flooding, with the town of Ialyssos bearing the brunt of the storm’s fury. Over 100 rescue requests poured in from the town, forcing authorities to urge residents to evacuate to higher ground. Dramatic footage shared on social media showed cars submerged in floodwaters and residents wading through knee-deep water.
Firefighters have been working tirelessly across the affected regions, conducting rescues, pumping water from inundated homes and businesses, and clearing roads blocked by fallen trees.
Authorities have warned that the severe weather is expected to continue until Monday and are urging residents to exercise extreme caution. Attica residents received alerts on Saturday warning of strong storms predicted to last through Sunday morning. The government has pledged to provide support to the affected areas and is working closely with local authorities to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts. The full extent of the damage caused by Storm Bora is still being assessed.
