ATHENS, Dec 4 – Greek authorities have successfully dismantled a criminal network that trafficked Colombian women into the country and coerced them into sex work at apartments and strip clubs.
The operation, which has been active since at least 2019, was uncovered following a series of police raids this week.
The alleged ringleader, along with eight other individuals, were arrested in connection with the operation, which involved exploiting women under the false promise of lucrative jobs as dancers in Greece. Instead, upon arrival, the women had their identification documents seized and were held in apartments in Athens, where they were forced into prostitution. The victims were also made to work in two nightclubs owned by the suspected crime boss, where they were coerced into having sex with clients to pay off fabricated debts.
As of this week, 29 women have been offered protection and support. Greek authorities have worked closely with non-governmental organisations to provide the necessary care for the victims.
The investigation was initiated following the testimony of one victim, leading to raids on the suspects’ apartments, homes, and nightclubs. Authorities seized cash, knives, bullets, and documents related to the group’s illicit activities during the raids.
In addition to the arrests made in Greece, two men, including one based in Colombia, have been identified as members of the trafficking ring and remain on the run.
