Tragedy in Kythira: Community President Dies by Suicide

Kythira's community is in shock after learning yesterday of the death of Kosmas Tzortzopoulos, president of the local community of Karavas. His death followed a serious incident in which he allegedly assaulted Vagelis Venardos, president of the Local Property Committee, as reported by Mr. Venardos himself. (As of Thursday midday, Mr. Venardos remains hospitalized under guard in Kythira's hospital). Mr. Venardos's wife was also reportedly injured in the incident.

According to kytheranews.gr, following the incident, Mr. Tzortzopoulos went to the Ammos Square area where he reportedly took his own life. He was later transported to Trifyllio Hospital where his death was confirmed. A forensic investigation is pending to determine the cause of death.

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) are investigating the exact circumstances and the lead-up to the incident, amid conflicting reports reaching news outlets. Residents of Karavas told the same source that there were disputes between the two men related to community matters. They claim a toxic climate existed between them, while some islanders on social media have even mentioned bullying.

Authorities have launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances and causes of both the assault and the tragic death of the community president. No official details have been released. The Kythira Police Department had not issued an official statement as of Thursday midday.
