Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman jointly chaired the inaugural Greece-Saudi Arabia High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council on Monday, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations between the two nations.
During the Council meeting, Mitsotakis emphasised that this is the first such strategic initiative Greece has undertaken with a Middle Eastern country. He highlighted the growing importance of Greek-Saudi collaboration, particularly in light of global challenges. "Saudi Arabia is a strategic partner for Europe and a key player in regional stability and prosperity," he noted, adding that the cooperation reflects shared visions for security, peace, and economic growth.

The Council established seven committees to oversee collaboration in critical sectors, including:
The leaders signed agreements encompassing 46 joint initiatives and approved a governance structure for the Council. Mitsotakis highlighted prospects for collaboration in renewable energy, shipping, agrinutrient products, and infrastructure. He also underlined Greece's potential as a Southeastern European hub, linking Asia and the Middle East with Europe.

Shared Vision Amid Regional Challenges
Mitsotakis and bin Salman discussed global and regional issues, including the conflicts in Gaza and Syria. The Greek Prime Minister reiterated Greece’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and a return to the political process for a two-state solution. He also underscored the importance of maritime safety and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
With Saudi Arabia playing a pivotal role in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), both leaders acknowledged the growing opportunities for enhanced economic and strategic ties.
This landmark meeting not only underscores the deepening relationship between Greece and Saudi Arabia but also highlights their shared commitment to addressing global challenges through partnership and cooperation.
