The Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family Affairs has announced a significant increase in the budget for the "Housing and Employment for the Homeless" program, which will now be funded to the tune of 20 million euros, up from the previous 10 million.
This initiative, developed in partnership with local municipalities, aims to provide crucial social housing for vulnerable groups in Greek society.
Beyond offering stable housing, the program provides additional support by offering training opportunities, fully subsidised employment for 12 months, and financial assistance for beneficiaries who wish to establish their own businesses. The program’s scope is also expanding, with its reach now extending from 42 to 89 municipalities across Greece.
In a significant policy expansion, two new categories of beneficiaries have been added to the program: families living in public sector housing and those living in precarious housing conditions, in addition to the homeless.
Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Affairs Sofia Zacharaki emphasised the program's importance, stating, "The aim of the Ministry’s housing policy is to ensure that vulnerable citizens, who are unable to meet even basic housing needs, have access to dignified living conditions. This is why we are continuously enhancing and broadening the scope of these programs. By increasing funding, we are able to extend our support to more individuals and families in need."
This program represents a key effort by the Greek government to combat homelessness and provide sustainable solutions to Greece's most vulnerable populations.
