Greek Police to Patrol Buses and Trains to Enhance Passenger Safety

In a significant move to boost security on public transport, Greece’s Minister of Citizen Protection, Michael Chrysochoidis, announced the deployment of 130 police officers on buses and suburban railway trains in Attica.

The initiative aims to curb delinquency and reassure passengers.

Speaking at a workshop organised by the Development Association of Western Athens (ASDA) on Monday (February 10), Chrysochoidis outlined the plan, which will see uniformed and plainclothes officers monitoring routes from the start of service until midnight.

“As part of our program, we are placing approximately 130 police officers on buses and trains to ensure passenger safety and combat criminal activity, which has been a persistent source of complaints,” Chrysochoidis stated.

The Minister emphasised the unique challenges faced by West Attica, an area struggling with high crime rates, particularly drug trafficking. “The cities in this region are significantly burdened, and addressing these issues is a priority,” he noted.

Chrysochoidis also urged the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) to accelerate the hiring of Special Guards dedicated to public transport security. This would allow the temporarily assigned police officers to return to their regular duties once the pilot program concludes.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve public safety and enhance confidence in Greece’s transport system.
