As the cold wave ‘Coral’ continues its approach, additional details have emerged regarding its impact and the emergency measures being implemented.

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) reiterates that temperatures in northern and eastern Greece will drop by 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, with the coldest conditions expected over the weekend.

Winds in the Aegean will remain strong, reaching up to 8 on the Beaufort scale, and snowfall is now expected to extend beyond the initially forecasted areas, affecting central and southern parts of the country as well. The increased intensity of the snowfall in urban centers could lead to transportation disruptions.

Strengthened Emergency Measures

In response to the latest developments, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, under Minister Vassilis Kikilias, has ramped up emergency preparedness. Local authorities have been instructed to be on high alert, and additional resources are being allocated to assist those in need.

The Municipality of Athens has expanded its emergency measures, extending the operational hours of heated shelters and increasing outreach programs for homeless individuals. The Friendship Club of Agios Eleftherios on Acharnon Street will remain open as long as necessary, providing accommodation, food, and essential care. Street work teams from the Directorate of Social Solidarity have also boosted their operations, distributing more blankets, food, and warm clothing.

Call for Public Vigilance

Authorities are urging residents to stay informed and take precautions as the situation evolves. Citizens are encouraged to report individuals requiring assistance by calling the K.Y.A.D.A. telephone center at 210-5246515/6 (ext. 0) or the four-digit number 1595 (subject to provider fees).

As ‘Coral’ intensifies, residents are advised to limit unnecessary travel, ensure their homes are adequately heated, and check on vulnerable neighbours. The authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates as needed.
