Violent clashes broke out in Syntagma Square on Friday afternoon following a large demonstration commemorating the victims of the Tempi train disaster.

The unrest began at approximately 13:00, just minutes after the peaceful rally concluded.

Hooded individuals launched Molotov cocktails and stones towards the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, escalating tensions outside the Hellenic Parliament. The violence reportedly started when groups began breaking marble slabs near the King George Hotel before setting fires and hurling incendiary devices into the Parliament courtyard.

Nearby, protesters spray-painted slogans—including the word “rage”—on the facade of the historic Grande Bretagne Hotel before setting fires at its entrance. The chaos intensified as rioters moved closer to the Parliament, where Molotov cocktails ignited a blaze on the canopy of the change officer stationed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

In the ensuing clashes, demonstrators threw stones and various objects at police officers guarding the Parliament courtyard. A kiosk attendant was reportedly injured and was assisted by police until an ambulance arrived.

Authorities attempted to disperse the remaining protesters as the square emptied following the rally. Police forces remain on high alert as tensions persist in the heart of Athens.
