The Hellenic Film Society (HFS) has unveiled a new initiative, “It’s Greek to Me! Greek-American Short Films,” inviting submissions from Greek-American filmmakers for a special short film program. The submission window is open until April 4, 2025, with selected films to be showcased at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, NY, on May 17, 2025, as part of HFS’s Always on Sunday Monthly Greek Film Series. Filmmakers can find detailed submission guidelines on the HFS website at www.hellenicfilmusa.org.

This program represents a shift for HFS, which has traditionally focused on presenting films produced in Greece by Greek filmmakers. “We’re excited to highlight Greek-American filmmakers with this initiative, especially at a renowned venue like the Museum of the Moving Image,” said Maria C. Miles, president of the Hellenic Film Society. “It’s our way of giving back to the Greek-American film community that has supported us over the years.”

Its Greek To Me

The Hellenic Film Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Astoria, NY, is dedicated to promoting Greek cinema and sharing its cultural richness with American audiences. The organization showcases a diverse range of feature films, documentaries, and shorts by Greek filmmakers, those of Greek descent, and works celebrating the cultures of Greece and Cyprus. Beyond its flagship Always on Sunday series, HFS hosts the annual New York Greek Film Expo and collaborates with other U.S.-based festivals, including the Chicago Greek Film Expo, South Florida Greek Film Festival, and Atlanta Greek Film Expo. The society’s efforts are primarily supported by the Kallinikeion Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), with additional backing from Microsoft, the Greek National Tourism Organization, Axia Spirit, the New York City Council, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and Antenna Satellite TV.
