Greece Marks 50 Years of the War Museum with Commemorative Coin

Greece is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the War Museum’s founding with a special commemorative coin, paying tribute to all those who fought for the nation's freedom.

The War Museum was established in 1964 by the Greek state to honour Greece’s military history and preserve its legacy. Its iconic Bauhaus-style building, designed by architect and National Technical University of Athens professor Thucydides Valentis, was officially inaugurated in July 1975 in the heart of Athens.

Dedicated to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting military artifacts, the Museum showcases Greece’s long history of struggle and resilience, from antiquity to the present day. Among its vast collection are historical relics, photographs, and film archives, with a particular highlight being the renowned Saroglou collection of weaponry from around the world.

Beyond its permanent exhibits, the Museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and has expanded its reach with branches in Thessaloniki and other Greek cities. As it marks half a century of operation, the War Museum remains a vital institution for preserving Greek historical memory and highlighting the enduring unity of Hellenism.
