Mykonos Declared in State of Emergency as Torrential Floods Sweep the Island

The Greek island of Mykonos has been placed under a state of emergency following severe weather conditions that brought torrential rainfall, sweeping away everything in its path.

The island, along with Paros, has suffered significant damage, prompting an emergency alert from Greece’s 112 warning system.

Residents of Mykonos received a warning message urging them to limit movement and follow authorities’ instructions. The alert stated: “Activate. Warning message. Severe weather conditions on the island of Mykonos. Limit your travel to the absolutely necessary and follow the instructions of the authorities.”

Floodwaters Ravage Mykonos

Despite receiving a greater volume of rainfall than Paros, Mykonos presented a different picture, albeit still facing serious challenges. Reports from the island describe streets turning into torrents, with water levels reaching up to one metre in several areas.

According to ERT correspondent Christiana Maniati, emergency crews were forced to break a seawall in Little Venice to divert the rushing waters, which had become impassable and destructive.

Local businesses, residents, and emergency teams from the Municipality and Civil Protection acted swiftly to combat the floodwaters, working tirelessly to salvage what they could.

Efforts to Restore Normalcy Ahead of Easter

Municipal authorities deployed 30 machines to repair damage to roads, homes, and businesses. Meanwhile, residents have taken matters into their own hands, working diligently to clean up and prepare for visitors, as the Greek Orthodox Easter—a peak tourism period—is just days away.

The unprecedented volume of rainfall has left many in shock, with long-time residents stating they have never witnessed such extreme weather on the island before.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage, while efforts to restore infrastructure and safeguard public safety remain a priority.
