On Monday, the Greek Coast Guard located the bodies of two women and 39 migrants on Farmakonisi, a small Aegean island near Turkey. Authorities are investigating the incident, with the cause of the deaths still unknown.
The group reportedly reached the island, 6 miles (9.7 km) from Turkey, earlier that day. Searches continue for possible shipwreck survivors, and those rescued were taken to Leros.
Greece remains a key entry point for migrants from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Since 2015, over 250,000 people have been rescued by the coast guard, though thousands have perished at sea, per UN data.
This month, seven migrants, including two children and two women, drowned off Lesvos when their boat sank.
