Greek-American actress and TV host Maria Menounos has been appointed as an ambassador for the Hellenic Olympic Committee, infusing Hollywood star power into Greece’s preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The announcement was made following a meeting between Menounos and Isidoro Kouvelos, President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, in Los Angeles, where Menounos resides and has built a successful career in entertainment.

Menounos’ role as ambassador aims to rally the Greek diaspora in the United States to support Team Hellas as they prepare for the 2028 Games. Beyond lending her celebrity status, she will play a key part in mobilizing the Greek-American community to bolster the team’s efforts, both through emotional support and financial contributions to ensure a strong Olympic presence.
“I am thrilled and proud that Maria has accepted my proposal,” said Kouvelos. “She is a radiant figure and, above all, a genuinely kind person. As a member of the Greek diaspora, Maria honours and loves her homeland, and her involvement fills us with joy and optimism. She will be a vital part of our journey to Los Angeles.”

In addition to her ambassadorial duties, Menounos will take on a prominent role in the Olympic Flame ceremonies for 2028. She has been named Master of Ceremonies for both the Flame Lighting Ceremony in Ancient Olympia and the Handover Ceremony at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. “This is a tremendous honour,” Kouvelos added, thanking Menounos for her commitment. “We want the Greek diaspora to stand by our team, to come and cheer for our athletes, and Maria is the perfect person to make that happen.”

Visibly moved, Menounos expressed her gratitude for the opportunity. “I am deeply honoured by this role,” she said. “I’m proud to be Greek and to have the chance to contribute to this effort. I want to support our athletes in every way I can and bring Greek-Americans together, united in helping Greece and our team succeed.”
Menounos grew emotional when speaking about her upcoming role in the Flame Lighting Ceremony at Ancient Olympia. “When the day comes to stand in the ancient stadium for the Flame Lighting, I know it will be an overwhelming moment, and I’ll be in tears,” she admitted.
With Menounos’ star power and heartfelt dedication, the Hellenic Olympic Committee is poised to strengthen ties with the global Greek community, ensuring a vibrant and united front as Team Hellas heads to Los Angeles in 2028.
