PM Mitsotakis Honoured in Germany for Greece’s Economic Comeback: “This Recognition Belongs to the Greek People”

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis received an award on Tuesday evening at the Economic Council Germany Conference, recognising the Greek government’s reforms and the country’s robust economic recovery.

In his remarks, Mitsotakis dedicated the honour to the people of Greece, emphasising their resilience and sacrifice.

“This recognition belongs primarily to the Greek people,” Mitsotakis said during the ceremony. “They have endured great difficulties and sacrifices, but at the same time, the Greek people have shown courage by embracing change and, of course, demonstrated remarkable resilience.”

Highlighting key areas of progress, the Greek Prime Minister pointed to the ongoing fight against tax evasion, stating that digital tools are being leveraged to improve efficiency and ensure that additional revenues can be returned to citizens.

On fiscal performance, Mitsotakis noted that while Greece’s primary surplus for 2024 had initially been projected at around 2%, it is now expected to reach an impressive 4.8%. He also underscored the importance of job creation as a sign of economic health.

“Progress is primarily reflected in jobs,” Mitsotakis said. “In the last six years, we have created 500,000 new jobs in Greece, and I believe that this is the most important achievement of our economic policy.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who also attended the event, praised Mitsotakis for the country’s remarkable turnaround. “What has been achieved in your country is truly significant, and I sincerely congratulate you on these great successes in recent years,” he said.

The award comes as Greece continues to gain international recognition for its economic transformation following a decade-long financial crisis.
