Coffee and Cocoa Prices Surge in Greece, Government Pushes Price-Comparison Tools

Coffee and chocolate prices in Greece are set to increase by 10–12%, according to Sotiris Anagnostopoulos, General Secretary of Trade, in an ERT interview. The hikes reflect global rises in food commodity costs, following significant increases in coffee prices last December and chocolate in January.

On a positive note, olive oil prices may drop by up to 25% in the coming months, offering some relief after last year’s sharp rises. Anagnostopoulos attributed higher fruit and vegetable prices to weather and seasonality, urging consumers to shop at cheaper open-air “laiki” markets.

To protect consumers, the government is intensifying efforts through increased inspections and digital tools for price transparency. The Development Ministry’s e-katanalotis platform, launched in April, helps consumers compare supermarket prices. A new mobile app, expected this fall, will allow reporting of profiteering or deceptive pricing.

Authorities are also exploring a new supervisory body to monitor market conditions and enhance consumer protection. Currently, the Consumers’ Protection Centre (INKA), established in 1970, remains Greece’s largest independent consumer organization.
