Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has been unanimously elected as the new president of the International Olympic Truce Centre (IOTC) for a four-year term, succeeding Thomas Bach, the outgoing president of the International Olympic Committee.
The decision was made during the IOTC’s annual board meeting held on June 5, 2025.
The IOTC, established in July 2000 through a joint initiative by Greece and the International Olympic Committee, aims to transform the Olympic Movement’s commitment to peace into tangible action. The concept of the Olympic Truce was first proposed by the Greek government in 1998 and formally adopted by the IOC in December 1999. The Centre’s mission is to promote Olympic values such as peace, friendship, and international understanding, while advocating for the cessation of hostilities during the Olympic Games and beyond. It seeks to foster a global culture of peace grounded in respect for human rights and the harmonious coexistence of nations.
Papandreou, who previously served as the IOTC’s vice president, has long been a staunch supporter of revitalising the Olympic Movement through its ancient Greek roots and ideals. “George Papandreou has played a pivotal role in shaping the Centre’s international initiatives to advance the Olympic Truce,” the IOTC stated. In his new role, he is expected to champion the power of sport and culture to promote values of reconciliation, the rule of law, and dialogue, particularly among younger generations.
In today’s volatile global landscape, marked by ongoing conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and widespread human rights violations, the IOTC emphasized the urgent need to revive the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympic Truce. “Condemning all forms of violence and armed conflict, the Centre remains committed to promoting inclusion and respect for diversity,” the statement added.
Papandreou’s leadership comes at a critical time as the world seeks to address division and foster unity through shared values. His tenure is expected to strengthen the IOTC’s efforts to build a lasting culture of peace for future generations.
