On Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Cyprus for a two-day official visit, a milestone hailed by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides as a historic advancement in the strengthening ties between the two nations.
Modi was greeted at Larnaca’s “Glafcos Clerides” Airport by President Christodoulides and Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. After a brief airport meeting, the leaders proceeded to Limassol for a business roundtable with Cypriot and Indian business leaders.
On Monday, the leaders will sign a Joint Declaration on Partnership, described by government sources as a pivotal step toward a long-term strategic alliance. The agreement will establish a framework for cooperation in areas like energy, defense, digital innovation, green technology, and investment.
During the business event, President Christodoulides announced the creation of the India–Cyprus–Greece Business and Investment Council. Modi praised the initiative as a promising avenue for economic collaboration, emphasizing India’s view of Cyprus as a trusted partner.
The leaders highlighted robust economic ties, with Cyprus being India’s eighth-largest source of foreign investment. Modi noted that Indian companies see Cyprus as a gateway to the EU and that bilateral trade has reached $150 million, with significant growth potential.
Modi also discussed expanding India’s Unified Payments Interface to Cyprus, noting ongoing talks and India’s role in half of global digital transactions.
President Christodoulides emphasized the strategic importance of strengthening ties with India, highlighting Cyprus’s role in the Eastern Mediterranean and its membership in the European Union. He praised Modi as a transformative leader and offered condolences for a recent air accident in India.
Both leaders committed to enhancing cooperation in security, artificial intelligence, tourism, infrastructure, and cybersecurity. The day ended with a private dinner hosted by President Christodoulides in honor of Modi.
