The international football community is in mourning following the tragic death of Portuguese striker Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car accident early Wednesday morning in Spain.
The 28-year-old Liverpool player died alongside his younger brother, André Jota, when their vehicle crashed and caught fire in the province of Zamora.
According to Spanish authorities, the fatal accident occurred around kilometer 65 of the A-52 motorway, near the town of Palacios de Sanabria. Preliminary investigations suggest the Lamborghini the brothers were traveling in veered off the road while overtaking, possibly due to a blown tire. The vehicle then crashed and burst into flames, igniting nearby vegetation. Both bodies were found burned beyond recognition and later identified via the car's license plate.
The news has sent shockwaves through the football world. Jota, who had been a key player for both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, was widely admired for his talent, humility, and professionalism.
Jota had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, just days earlier on June 22. The couple shared three children: Deni (born 2021), Duarte (2023), and their youngest, born in 2024.

A Stellar Career Cut Short
Born on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Jota began his professional career with Paços de Ferreira at the age of 17. He later signed with Atlético Madrid in 2016, but never played a match for the Spanish giants, instead going on loan to FC Porto and then to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves made his move permanent, and his performances there caught the attention of Liverpool.
In 2020, the Reds signed Jota for a reported £45 million. Under Jürgen Klopp, he quickly became an integral part of the squad, known for his sharp finishing and intelligent movement. Despite recent injury struggles under new manager Arne Slot, he scored six goals in 26 Premier League appearances last season.
Jota made 182 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 65 goals. During his time with the club, he helped secure a Premier League title in 2025, an FA Cup in 2022, and two League Cups in 2022 and 2024.
Internationally, Jota earned 50 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He was part of the squads that won two UEFA Nations League titles.

Tributes Pour In
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) expressed deep sorrow, writing:
"We have lost two champions. Much more than an outstanding footballer, Diogo Jota was a wonderful human being—respected by teammates and rivals alike, and someone who radiated joy."
"We will do everything in our power to honor their legacy," the statement concluded.
Jota’s brother, André, 26, played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division and previously for Beira-Mar.
Spanish media outlet La Opinión de Zamora published harrowing images of the crash site, showing the charred remains of the luxury vehicle. The shocking scene has further intensified the grief surrounding the sudden loss of two young athletes.
