Greece Implements New "Cruise Fee" for Disembarking Passengers Starting July 21

A new "Cruise Fee" will come into effect across Greek ports beginning Monday, July 21, targeting passengers disembarking as part of sightseeing excursions on professional recreational vessels.

The fee, introduced under Article 42 of Law 4256/2014, is part of a government initiative to boost state revenue from tourism-related activities.

The charge will apply to all passengers disembarking at Greek ports during organised cruise stops and will vary depending on the season and destination.

Fee Structure by Season and Destination:

  • High Season (June 1 – September 30):
    • €20 for disembarkation at Mykonos and Santorini
    • €5 for disembarkation at other Greek ports
  • Transitional Periods (April 1 – May 31 & October 1 – October 31):
    • €12 for Mykonos and Santorini
    • €3 for other ports
  • Low Season (November 1 – March 31):
    • €4 for Mykonos and Santorini
    • €1 for other ports

Though the fee is paid by passengers, the responsibility for its collection and electronic remittance to the Greek state lies with cruise companies and shipping agents. The process is managed by the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy through a dedicated digital platform.

The move underscores Greece’s broader efforts to regulate and capitalize on the booming cruise tourism sector, especially in high-traffic destinations like Mykonos and Santorini.
