In a major drug bust at Igoumenitsa’s international port, Greek Coast Guard officers arrested a 52-year-old Greek truck driver early Tuesday morning for violating Greece’s drug trafficking laws.
The operation, led by the Coast Guard’s K-9 Drug Detection Unit and the Regional Anti-Narcotics Team (P.O.DI.N.), with support from the local Port Security Office, uncovered a massive haul of narcotics hidden in a truck arriving from Italy.
During a routine inspection of a truck unloaded from a passenger-cargo ferry, the Coast Guard’s specially trained detection dog, “Vlad,” flagged a suspicious load. A thorough search revealed a carefully concealed pallet within the truck’s legitimate groupage cargo, containing eight cardboard boxes packed with illegal substances. The haul included:
- 30 makeshift packages of processed cannabis (hashish), weighing 15.19 kilograms,
- 56 airtight packages of hydroponically grown cannabis (skunk), totaling 60.89 kilograms,
- 10 cocaine slabs with various logos, weighing 11.3 kilograms.

The seized drugs, valued at approximately €2.75 million, were confiscated along with two mobile phones, a tablet computer, and the truck and its trailer, which will be handed over to Igoumenitsa Customs. The Igoumenitsa Central Port Authority is continuing its investigation to identify the intended recipients in Greece, while European communication channels have been activated to collaborate with foreign law enforcement for further leads.
This operation underscores the Greek Coast Guard’s ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking through Greece’s ports.
