Taverna by The Gyro Project will open on Monday, August 4th, at Hudson Yards, occupying a 2,000-square-foot space formerly part of Nizuc Mexican Restaurant, located at 505 West 37th Street (corner of 37th Street & 10th Avenue).
This new Greek dining concept builds on The Gyro Project’s fast-casual legacy, offering a warm, soulful atmosphere with a separate entrance on 37th Street, a private ramp, and a shared hallway. The restaurant features private dining rooms, 50 indoor seats, and 12-14 outdoor seats for al fresco dining.
Led by Executive Chef Pavlos Xenopoulos, previously of Pylos and Milos, the menu blends The Gyro Project’s classics with new Taverna-style dishes rooted in traditional Greek home cooking. Highlights include Greek-style Lamb Chops, Lavraki (butterflied sea bass with lemon potatoes), conventional and Vegan Artichoke Mousaka (featuring artichoke hearts, spinach, leeks, and feta bechamel), and Biftekakia (Greek burgers made with a blend of beef, lamb, and veal).
The menu also offers a full selection of liquor, featuring Greek-inspired beers, Retsina wines, and cocktails.
Favorites from The Gyro Project, such as Pita Wraps (with beef & lamb gyro, chicken gyro, or roasted salmon), Mixed Grill platters (with gyros, shawarma, fries, lemon potatoes, tzatziki, and pita), Greek mezedes like Dip Samplers and Gigantes Beans, and desserts like Frozen Yogurt, Bougatsa, and Baklava Cheesecake, will also be available.
“Taverna is the evolution of our vision,” says co-owner George Tenedios. “It’s about bringing my father’s recipes to a welcoming, sit-down setting where people can connect over authentic Greek flavors.”
The space offers an elevated, family-style vibe while retaining The Gyro Project’s approachable authenticity, with curated wine pairings and fresh Mediterranean ingredients. Taverna follows The Gyro Project’s recent expansions, including Upper West Side (April 2025), Newark’s Gateway Center (March 2025), and Fort Lee (2023), with upcoming locations in Midtown Manhattan (September 2025), Kips Bay (October 2025), and a sixth in New Jersey (November 2025).
