The former royal estate of Tatoi is currently undergoing a significant transformation, thanks to a comprehensive restoration project spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture. Spanning 34 acres, this initiative aims to restore the estate's historic landscape, which includes the palace grounds, the greenhouse, and the tennis court. Additionally, the project will enhance the network of paths to create a harmonious blend of history and nature for visitors.
Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “This restoration is just as essential as preserving the monumental buildings. It provides a cohesive experience that integrates the historical and natural elements of the estate.” The restoration works adhere to strict standards by utilizing archival records, local plants, and eco-friendly materials. This approach not only respects the environment and ensures historical accuracy but also complies with the latest fire protection regulations.
Key features of the project include the restoration of the Palace Section, which will revitalize the original visitor route, historic flower beds, and the Alley with the Aries. In the Production Unit, a new Plane Tree Alley will be created, featuring wildflowers and the planting of 95 new trees. Additionally, the 19th-century Greenhouse and the 1890s tennis court are being restored to their original form and function.
Acquired by King George I in 1872 and transferred to the state in 2003, Tatoi is currently recovering from the damage caused by the 2021 fire. The project aims to preserve its unique historical, architectural, and natural legacy for future generations.
