July 2025 Was One of the Hottest on Record in Greece

Greece has just experienced its second hottest July in the past 15 years, with Central and Northern regions especially impacted by persistent and extreme heat, according to data from meteo.gr and the National Observatory of Athens.

The month was marked by prolonged heatwaves, particularly between July 14 and 28, with average maximum daily temperatures consistently exceeding seasonal norms across the country. The findings are based on records from 53 meteorological stations that have been operating since 2010.

In Northern and Central Greece, July 2025 ranks as the second hottest since 2010. The Peloponnese, Thessaly, the Aegean, and the Dodecanese Islands saw their third hottest July. In Crete, Western Greece, and the Ionian Islands, this July ranks as the fourth and fifth hottest, respectively.

The intense heat took a toll on daily life, particularly in Athens, where average maximum temperatures were 2.1°C above normal, with 25 out of 31 days exceeding typical seasonal levels. In Thessaloniki, 24 days surpassed the average maximum temperature for the 2010–2019 period, with a monthly deviation of +1.3°C.

The sweltering conditions triggered alerts, strained infrastructure, and raised public health concerns—especially during the peak days when temperatures climbed above 45°C in some urban areas. The data underscores the growing impact of climate change across the Mediterranean, with July 2025 serving as a stark reminder of what increasingly appears to be a new normal for Greek summers.
