A 55-year-old worker of Albanian origin has died in a workplace accident at a biological treatment plant in Dafnes, near Heraklion, Crete.
The victim was employed by a private contractor tasked with cleaning the sewage facility when he fell into a sewage tank under unclear circumstances. The incident occurred on Saturday and prompted a large-scale emergency response.
According to local reports, the alarm was raised by a fellow worker who noticed the man was missing. Suspecting the worst upon seeing the tank lid open, he immediately contacted emergency services.
Ten firefighters arrived on the scene with three vehicles. Assisted by a tanker truck used to pump out the sewage, they eventually located the man inside the tank. He was pulled out unconscious and rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The case raises fresh concerns about worker safety in hazardous environments.
