Dendias in Tinos for Feast of the Dormition and Anniversary of “Elli” Torpedoing

TINOS, Greece – August 15, 2025 – Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias arrived in Tinos on Friday to attend celebrations for the Dormition of the Theotokos and to mark the 85th anniversary of the torpedoing of the Greek cruiser Elli by an Italian submarine in 1940.

The Elli was sunk on August 15, 1940, during peacetime, when the Italian submarine Delfino launched an unprovoked attack while the ship was anchored in Tinos for the religious holiday. Nine crew members were killed and 24 were injured.

The incident, which occurred while Greece maintained neutrality under the Metaxas dictatorship, was one of several acts of Italian aggression leading up to the invasion of Greece on October 28, 1940.

Today’s events in Tinos combine religious observances with military commemorations, honoring the victims and reaffirming the island’s historical and symbolic importance.
